“We are so thankful to God for all that he has blessed us with”

KimKim Mason has worked here at St G’s since 2007 as part of our admin team; she is moving on to Sheffield with her family as she begins ordination training with St Barnabas Theological Centre.

“Lots of things are changing for us right now, we have been living in Leeds and worshipping here at St George’s for 7 years but we are about to move on.”

Kim shares with us her story of Gods calling on her life and encouragements.

“I became a Christian when I was 16; while I was visiting a large church in Sheffield I heard a sermon on debt; at that point I realised that God wasn’t some historical event that happened 2000 years ago but that Jesus was relevant to today and that the church had the power to be able to transform people’s lives. A few weeks later it was Easter Sunday and I heard the Easter message for the first time; God filled me with the Holy Spirit and I wept all evening!”

“Within a year of becoming a Christian I knew that I wanted to work full time in Christian ministry.  I had no idea what that looked like and certainly didn’t expect that to look like becoming a vicar. The last 16 years have been working out what that calling means, and with Chris, also working out what that means as a family. Sheffield has always been my spiritual home, and I’ve always felt a connection to it as a city so I’m really very happy to be moving back.”

“When we moved to Leeds in 2007 and I started working at St G’s we really felt called to be, and to minister, in the city in the North of the country. The thing I love about Leeds is that it is full of life and being at St G’s over the last seven years has been a real blessing to us. We have learnt and grown so much, and we have especially valued seeing how the churches in Leeds work together, and how St G’s is really trying to work out how to love Leeds – to be a blessing to the city it is in.”

“I’m passionate about enabling every Christian sat in church on a Sunday to be able to minister to their full potential…in equipping and releasing everyone in the church to extend the Kingdom in their everyday contexts. That is how we will see real
transformation.”

“I’m passionate about enabling every Christian sat in church on a Sunday to be able to minister to their full potential, for some women that will be as Bishops and I’m really pleased that the church has a found a way to make that possible, but I think the real
challenge is at the other end of the spectrum; in equipping and releasing everyone in the church to extend the Kingdom in their everyday contexts. That is how we will see real
transformation.”

“In May this year I was approved to train for ordained ministry in the Church of England, which means a lot of change for us. In September I will be leaving the staff team at St G’s as I start maternity leave and as a family we will be moving to Sheffield to start worshipping at All Saints Ecclesall, which is where I will be working once I start ordination training with St Barnabas in September 2015.”

“God has been incredibly gracious to us this year, blessing us with peace and preparing a way before us: providing a church and placement for my training, a new job for Chris in Sheffield and a pre-school place for Evelyn in the first school we applied for. We just need accommodation to fall into place but we are really excited about the move.”

“We are so thankful to God for all that he has blessed us with this year.”

“Right now we are really praying that we can sell our house so that we can buy a new home in Sheffield. Longer term we will be facing new challenges as we work out how to balance both of us working full time whilst raising two incredible little girls. We strongly
believe that having our whole family at the centre of ministry is the best thing for all of us, but how that works out in practice, particularly for the girls, will take a lot of wisdom!”

We pray for the Mason family as they move on.

To love the city where God has placed us

JonathanThe new PCC have been busily drafting a mission action plan for St George’s.This will state accurately what our mission is so that we can use our resources in the best way for what God wants us to do in the future; we believe that God is calling us to share our resources more widely. We are working on a 3yr plan for 2013-16 with an overall ‘to share the life of Jesus Christ and to love the city where God has placed us’. The big new thing is to take responsibility with others for the renewal and growth of the Church in Leeds. The plan states that we will aim to ‘multiply missional churches across Leeds (and the North)’. This will mean strategic consultations with the diocese and other churches in Leeds.

Part of this is our commitment as a church to setting up the new St Barnabas Theological Centre (SBTC) in partnership with the Belfrey Church York, St Thomas Crookes Sheffield, the Church of England dioceses in Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Baptist Association. Mark Powley is the director of SBTC; Jon Swales and James Barnett will also be part of the new teaching team. They will teach a biblical theology of the kingdom of God and best current missional practice for growing and planting contemporary churches. Ordinands will have 3 days studying and 3 days learning on a church placement.

Some exciting news is that former intern Jimmy Lawrence will be returning to Leeds to train as an ordinand alongside Chris Sayburn. As Chris begins his training in September his role at StG’s will change. Jimmy will be placed at Wrangthorn, living at our house on Vesper lane.

Jimmy will be working with Joanna Pearson at Wrangthorn, alongside the team from St G’s who will be commissioned on 15 September. Crucially, they are not leaving St G’s, they will remain part of the family; the vision is for our two churches to work together as one team.

All these are exciting developments and will involve all of us. For St G’s it means giving and sharing our resources; especially our resources in people including our staff. All of us should ask, from time to time, where God wants us to serve. As some of us are sent out we need new people to step up and get involved, filling roles according to their gifts. It may feel as though we are being stretched but let’s rise to the challenge!

Please be praying that God will make his call on St George’s very clear; pray for the PCC; pray for Mark Powley and the SBTC; for Joanna Pearson and Wrangthorn; that they will all know God’s power and blessing as they step out, with their teams, in faith.

ACM 2013: Discipleship & Pastoral Care

“Thanks to all of you for playing your part in the St George’s family, and in furthering our mission to Share Life and Love Leeds. Thank you for giving your time, gifts, energy, commitment, prayers and financial support. It is a big team effort.” Jonathan Clark

Here is an overview of our ministries and activities in the last 12 months. Together as a Church we can celebrate what God is doing!

Discipleship

Academy of Life looks closely at the ways in which we share, and grow in, the life God has for us in Jesus Christ.

Since last year’s trialling of Academy of Life material with Connections Network and the staff team, we are running our first full Saturday Course with 60-70 people. Responses have been very positive. This year’s interns have also worked through the material and have been involved in teaching Academy of Life to our students, again with very encouraging results.

Our plan is to prepare the Academy of Life material for wider distribution, in St George’s and possibly beyond. More importantly we can all seek to grow, individually and together, in the True, Full, Shared, Deep, Pure, Serving and Bold Life that God has for us!

Alongside Academy of Life on Saturday mornings, the School of Theology sessions have fed and challenged Christians from St George’s and beyond.

Interns

This year we have 16 interns, four of whom are on placement in other churches around Leeds. We have developed greater flexibility in the scheme: our first older ‘Interns Plus’ and some part-time graduate interns. Our midweek training is also accessible to other interns in the region. There has been wide appreciation for the gift St George’s interns have been to the diocese, including the current placements at Wrangthorn, Christ Church Armley, Holy Trinity Meanwood and Riverside.

Running a scheme of this size has been a stretch. We will continue to reflect on how to balance the benefits of wide deployment with the need to manage the scheme well.

St Barnabas Theological Centre

In an unprecedented development in the Yorkshire dioceses, St George’s is about to launch a brand new ordination track and theological training centre with St Thomas Crookes, St Michael le Belfrey and the Yorkshire Ministry Course. Mark Powley has been working as Launch Director since January 2012 and now works two days a week for SBTC.

Teaching will begin in September in Sheffield. Ordinands will train through St Barnabas while being on long term placement throughout Yorkshire, including here in Leeds. The new St Barnabas Centre will train vicars, facilitate church planting and enable good theological teaching to reach church members in new ways.

Pastoral Care

Day by day and week by week our small groups and networks are caring for one another and demonstrating what it means to share life and to be family.  Alongside this there are an amazing number of people who provide additional resources of pastoral care.  We have been delighted to welcome John Walker to the team who brings wisdom, experience and availability for visiting and one to one pastoral care.  We continue to give thanks for the commitment of the visiting team, the PrayerNet team who pray regularly for specific needs, for Alan Spicer, for the prayer ministry team and for many others who offer time and prayer for individuals. In all of this we ‘seek to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the son of God and become mature, attaining the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.’
